The Neighborhood Stewardship Project was created to
harness the existing "people power" that often works quietly but
persistently "behind the scenes" to create
and maintain green, open spaces in New York
City. The project intends to identify, map and provide information
on local community groups, non-profit organizations government
programs and even businesses that care for the land in New York
City - and eventually we plan to expand to other regions and cities.
This section is an important addition to OASIS as it adds a layer of
human resources and social capital which is critical for use in
open space management strategies.
From the forest to the window box, green rooftops to steams, stewards
work on sites of all different types, scales,
and visibility. This project looks to highlight the broadest range
of stewardship activities, going beyond an atlas of greening groups
to focus on actual locations where people from environmental
professionals, to teachers, to youth, to seniors actively care for
the land. Local stewards working on the ground to improve and
maintain their own neighborhoods are essential to the existence and
vitality of urban open space. This project is a collaboration of
OASIS partners in an effort to:
- Share stewardship databases with each other
and the public, providing the public with a way to search for
stewardship groups in their community by site type, programmatic
interest, and group type;
- Help groups plan their stewardship activities
by demonstrating needs or gaps in current stewardship activity and
by providing connections to groups working on similar issues or in
the same area;
- Create a model for collecting and sharing
stewardship information that can be shared with other cities or regions.
