This assessment has been created by the Urban Ecology Collaborative
(UEC) in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and state forestry
agencies to determine the status of organizations and community-based
urban forestry initiatives operating in selected major cities in the
Northeast and Midwest (Boston, New Haven, New York, Pittsburgh,
Baltimore, Washington D.C). While a great deal of urban forestry data
is emerging from cities across the country, there is currently no
systematic assessment of the range of ecological opportunities and
priorities for each city. This model assessment intends to identify
the existing framework of organizational delivery systems, patterns,
gaps and processes that relate to overall urban and community forest
management. The findings will be presented with the intent to inform
development of future programs.
UEC Assessment Description
UEC Assessment Tool
UEC Assessment Background/Development
Specifically, the assessment team intends to:
- Discover the gaps between biophysical and social resources,
organizations, and programs
- Highlight specific stewardship opportunities, priorities and
resources in each major city
- Examine the current capacity of organizations to use urban and
community forestry activities in the improvement of the physical
environment and quality of life issues common to large urban areas
- Determine strategies for the exchange of urban and community
forestry tools and techniques
It is being implemented in NYC through the summer and fall of 2004
in a partnership between the USDA Forest Service, the OASIS Citizen
Stewardship Committee, and the NYU Wallerstein Collaborative for
Urban Environmental Education.
