OASIS News and Awards

May 31, 2002: The J.M. Kaplan Fund awards NYPIRG CMAP and New Yorkers for Parks a one-year $25,000 grant to expand OASIS in a way that provides strategic information in an easily accessible way that supports the work of the city’s growing parks advocacy movement.

May 28, 2002: The Forest Service names OASIS a “Strategic Public Outreach Partner” in support of the Forest Service’s environmental justice efforts, and provides a $5,000 award.

June 19, 2001: the Municipal Art Society awarded the OASIS partnership its annual Certificate of Merit. The Municipal Art Society has a long tradition of recognizing people, places, organizations, and momentous events that have, in the Society’s view, made an exceptional contribution to the life of New York City. The Society noted that this year, it believes that “the public accessibility and vast potential of OASIS NYC as a resource deserves to be applauded.”

The award was presented at the Society’s annual meeting. Other award recipients this year were OASIS partnership members the Green Map System and Partnership for Parks, as well as the Doe Fund and Reverend Hattie Smith-Davis.  Read the OASIS news release [PDF file] about the award.

April 2001: Several partner organizations from the OASIS Steering Committee (NYPIRG CMAP, Council on the Environment of NYC, Trees New York, the Forest Service’s Northeast Research Station, NYC Parks Department, and ESRI) receive an 18-month, $175,000 award through the Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program (Title VIII). The funds, which will be matched 1-for-1, will be used to collect neighborhood tree data in selected areas of the city by community partners, enhance this data through computer mapping and analysis, and deliver the information to the public through the OASIS maps.

OASIS featured at the following presentations:
